Every comparison article lists the same features side by side and declares a winner. That's not how this decision actually goes wrong. Both platforms will take a credit card and ship a product. The difference shows up eighteen months later, and it usually comes down to one question: who is going to maintain this?
The real trade-off
Shopify is hosted. Updates, security patches, PCI compliance, and uptime are somebody else's problem. You pay a monthly fee and a transaction cut, and in exchange you stop thinking about infrastructure.
WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin. It's free to install, which is the part everyone notices, and it will happily let you build anything. You are also now responsible for hosting, backups, plugin conflicts, PHP versions, and the security of a site that takes payments.
If you have a developer on call, that control is genuinely valuable. If you don't, “free” turns into an unmaintained store running six outdated plugins.
Where Shopify wins
- You want to sell, not administer. Most owner-operated stores fall here.
- Checkout matters more than anything. Shopify's checkout is heavily optimized and you can't easily break it.
- You sell in person too. Shopify POS keeps inventory honest across a shop and a website — genuinely useful for a retail storefront.
- You need it live in weeks, not months.
Where WooCommerce wins
- Content is the main draw. If you're running a serious blog or resource library and the store is secondary, WordPress is the better home.
- Unusual product logic — complex configurators, odd pricing rules, membership tiers — where you'd otherwise fight the platform.
- Margins are thin at high volume and transaction fees genuinely add up.
- You have technical help. This is the one that decides it.
The Florida-specific wrinkle
Two things come up constantly with retailers here. First, sales tax: Florida's discretionary surtax varies by county, so a store shipping statewide needs rates handled properly rather than a flat guess. Shopify handles this natively; WooCommerce needs a plugin configured correctly.
Second, seasonality. Tourist-driven businesses see enormous traffic swings. A self-hosted store on cheap shared hosting is exactly the thing that falls over during your best weekend of the year. Hosted platforms absorb that without you thinking about it.
A simple way to decide
If you can't name the person who will apply a security update six months from now, choose Shopify. If you can, and you need control the platform won't give you, WooCommerce earns its keep. Almost every store that regrets its choice picked WooCommerce for the price tag and had nobody to run it.
