B2B buyers research the way everyone else does. They search, compare, and shortlist before they contact anyone. The difference is that most wholesale sites have removed themselves from that process entirely by locking the whole store.
The structural problem
Shopify's password page blocks crawlers completely. A password-protected storefront cannot rank for anything — not your product ranges, not your capabilities, not your location. The only visitors are people who already knew your name, which means search is contributing nothing.
The fix is separating information from pricing. Information can be public and crawlable. Pricing and ordering belong behind the login. See B2B access control for the mechanics.
What should be public
- Product ranges and categories, with real descriptions
- Specifications, materials, dimensions, certifications — the technical detail buyers filter on
- Minimum order quantities and typical lead times
- Territories and industries you supply
- Your wholesale application page, which is the single most important page to keep indexable
- Capability and process content that demonstrates you can actually supply at scale
What trade buyers actually search
B2B search intent is different in shape from retail. The high-value queries tend to be:
- Supplier searches: "wholesale [product] supplier", "[product] distributor [region]"
- Qualification searches: "[product] wholesale minimum order", "bulk [product] pricing"
- Comparison searches: "[brand] vs [brand] wholesale", "best [product] supplier for [use case]"
- Specification searches: highly technical, low volume, very high intent
- Process searches: "how to open a wholesale account with [category]"
Volumes are small compared with consumer terms. Value per visitor is far higher, because a single new wholesale account can be worth years of retail orders.
The application page is your money page
Treat it as the most important commercial page on the site. It should be indexable, linked from your main navigation, and written to answer the questions a buyer has before applying: what are the minimums, what documents do you need, how long does approval take, what happens next. Vague application pages lose qualified applicants who assume the answer is bad news.
Content that earns B2B links
B2B link building is usually easier than consumer, because the audience is professional and the content can be genuinely useful: specification guides, sizing or compatibility references, industry data, and process explainers. Trade publications and industry associations link to that kind of material far more readily than to marketing pages.
Technical points specific to B2B
- Make sure gated pages return proper status codes rather than soft 404s
- Do not let logged-in and logged-out versions of a URL produce duplicate content
- Keep the public catalog crawlable even when prices render only for authenticated users
- Use Product and Organization schema on public product detail without marking up prices you do not display
