Answer engine optimization is structuring content so a machine can lift a clean answer straight off your page — into a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, a voice assistant response, or an AI-generated summary.
It's the highest-leverage work available on a site that already ranks in the top ten, because you're reformatting existing authority rather than building new authority.
Why a page ranked fourth can beat the page ranked first
Snippets aren't awarded to the top result automatically. They're extracted from whichever page in the top ten answers the question most cleanly. A well-structured page at position four regularly takes the box from a rambling page at position one — and lands above it.
The format that wins
Under a heading phrased as the actual question, give a direct answer in roughly 40–60 words. Complete sentences. No throat-clearing. Then expand below for readers who want the full picture.
Match the format to the query type, because Google is consistent about this:
- Paragraph snippets — definitions and “what is” questions.
- Numbered lists — processes and “how to” questions.
- Bulleted lists — unordered sets, “types of”, “best”.
- Tables — comparisons, pricing, specifications.
Search the target question first and look at what currently holds the box. If it's a table and you wrote paragraphs, you won't take it.
Finding questions worth owning
The best source isn't a keyword tool — it's your phone. The questions customers ask before hiring you are the ones with actual commercial intent.
Then supplement: the People Also Ask box itself (expand one and it branches), Search Console queries phrased as questions, and forum threads where people ask in their own words.
Schema helps, but it isn't the mechanism
FAQPage and HowTo markup make your structure explicit and can earn rich results. They don't substitute for a clear answer on the page. Marking up a vague paragraph doesn't make it quotable.
The zero-click objection
Yes — some snippet wins mean the searcher gets the answer and doesn't click. That's a real trade. But the brand attribution sits at the top of the page, and answering one question well is how you become the source for the next, higher-intent one. Structure the snippet to answer completely while leaving a clear reason to click for the full detail.
